Introducing Leah Hitchcock

Leah Hithcock is a lifelong athlete who brings her incredible energy, obsessive love for music, and pursuit of the beloved power walk to the bike to create a cycling experience you will not want to miss. We caught up with her to discuss what inspired her to move from the front row to the instructor’s podium, what types of songs we might expect from her playlists, and where we can find her outside of the studio. Next time you see her, be sure to introduce yourself, and she is always open to requests! You can find Leah popping up all over the schedule, including this Saturday at 11:30!

I ride at Rêve because…

It’s good for mind, body, and soul. I always leave Rêve feeling exhausted physically, at ease mentally, and fulfilled and rejuvenated in a much deeper sense. These days, experiences like that are rare; however, at Rêve I catch that feeling each and  every ride. Now, to be able to experience that every day, only a few miles from home, is such a privilege.

Teaching’s a big job! About what are you most excited? What makes your class unique?

I get so much joy out of making others feel good about themselves. There’s so much negative energy out there in the world; for 50 minutes, I want the room to be filled with only the good stuff. If I can make you feel like a bad ass on the bike, it’s a good day for me.

My favorite moment in class is…

POWER WALKIN’! Whether it’s before a push or after, it just does it for me. You’re either looking ahead to this big push…you can just see it out in front of you, ready to be taken on. Or you’re basking in the glow of what you’ve just completed. It’s a triumphant celebration of your body and the work you’re doing.

The most challenging part about becoming an instructor has been…

Multi-tasking. There’s a lot going on up there, from the technology to communicating choreography in a clear way to motivating and inspiring your audience – all while remembering to be your authentic self! It gets easier and easier every time I take the podium, but it’s been a journey to learn how to keep it all straight in my brain.

Some songs you’ll definitely find on my first few playlists will be…

Always something new. I’ve been obsessed with music since middle school and I’m constantly looking for that new song that makes me lose my mind because I love it so much. Newer faves – Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa, Feel the Same by Basic Tape, and this Avicii/Kendrick Lamar mashup “Poetic Justice x Without You.” Old faves – Burning Love by Elvis, This Must Be the Place by The Talking Heads and anything Whitney Houston. All coming soon to a Rêve near you…

When I’m not at the studio, you can find me…

I’m an analyst in the Underwriting department at MEMIC, a workers’ compensation insurance company in the Old Port. I also make the occasional appearance as a waitress at the Olive Garden on Sunday nights. Beyond work, I am slowly but surely eating my way through Portland. I love the beach in any season, and I love spending time with friends and family, especially if there is a game involved.
