Rêve Rider Spotlight: Barbara Fletcher
With Summer in full swing here in Portland, it’s hard not to embrace the growth and positive energy that is inherent to this season. We are lucky to get daily encouragement from our amazing community of students and staff who always inspire us by their commitment both in and out of the studio.
Someone who is constantly inspiring us with her dedication is Barbara Fletcher. As an elementary school principal and a mother, she consistently shows up to help others grow and dream while still finding the time to show up for herself with regular mat and spin classes! We had an opportunity to ask Barbara about herself and her experience here at Rêve!
What's your favorite thing about Rêve?
The people and the atmosphere! Every time I walk into the studio I feel welcomed and accepted by all, staff and participants alike. I am always greeted with smiles, which are incredibly encouraging, especially on the toughest of days. I appreciate the emphasis placed on being part of a team and gaining energy from others, while also forging paths on our own fitness journeys. During one of the first cycling classes I experienced at Rêve, the instructor shared inspiring messaging around making ourselves stronger as opposed to smaller. As a person who has often struggled with body image and self confidence, this mantra has kept me coming back, knowing I am in the right place physically and mentally each time I show up. The classes are also, of course, incredible! Each class (cycling or mat) is beautifully instructed with encouragement around listening to your body, trusting your body and focusing on what your body can do.
How did you find us?
A friend brought me to a class out on Thompson's Point during the summer of 2021. I had never been on a spin bike prior. The feelings of accomplishment, ability to follow along successfully as a first timer, and muscle soreness (LOL), stuck with me as positives, leaving me considering future classes and ultimately a membership.
What's one suggestion or tip you would give someone thinking about coming to Rêve for the first time?
Come! Try it! Rêve is a warm and welcoming environment with kind, helpful staff and community members!
What are some things that you do for fun outside of attending Rêve classes?
I am a mom of two teenage sons, ages 16 and 18, and an elementary school principal whose husband is a teacher. When we have time away from our very busy respective school and work lives, we love hanging out at home, catching up, watching movies and traveling together. Most recently we have been loving trips to sunny Florida! We are a music loving family, husband and sons, all musicians. We enjoy live music and attend concerts as often as we can. Personally, I love to read, shop, and connect with friends. During Maine summer, I LOVE the beach!
Anything else you would like to note?
Prior to joining Rêve, I was losing steam with my at home exercise routine. Since day one at Rêve, I have been motivated to return, challenged to work hard and inspired to always be my best self as a result of the judgment free and uplifting environment that is Rêve!
